I have been doing my assignments in the space that is provided without opening up the work space. Is that okay?

You don't need to work on workspaces, although you may work on it if you are in a caffe shop , school or any other place like that . It will allow you to learn and save the code you did . If you cant have a texteditor , then you can use workspace to learn as you can learn HTML and CSS.
You can follow along with the videos using a text editor. If you use windows , I sugest to get notepad ++ or sublime 2, these are great for code editor , my favourite is sublime because of the style and how it works.
If you ever want help with your code, poste it on codepen.io or look on the right side bar " Tips for asking questions " and do as they say to post your code. Surely someone will help you soon.
