I dont know how to use the negation

index.php
<?php

//Available roles: author, editor, admin
$role = 'editor';

//add conditional statement
if($username == 'is set' && !($role ==  'dmin')){

isset(var) is a method which returns a boolean value based on whether the argument var is null (false) or not null(true). Your check to determine if the $role is not admin would work except that you mis-spelled 'admin'. A slightly easier way of checking for this would be to do the following:

if (isset($username) && $role != 'admin') {
   --stuff to do--
}
