Will there be a course on VR game development in the future?

I'd love to create a VR game and, given Nick is developing one, I wanted to know if he will teach us in the future.

Hi everyone,

We actually just announced our VR Techdegree coming January 2017. Here's the blog post: http://blog.teamtreehouse.com/introducing-the-vr-techdegree

Our first VR course is already live and many more are on the way. If you'd like to get started, be sure to check out the Game Development with Unity Track.

Hi everyone,

There's a lot to cover in Unity on its own, and VR is a fairly advanced topic, so it might be a little while before we get to VR. That said, Unity rolled VR support directly into their API a few months ago, so I may be making a VR course sooner than I anticipated. The other issue with VR right now is that it's very volatile, so any course I could make on VR today would become outdated uncomfortably fast. I'm hoping that once Oculus, HTC, and Sony all have consumer versions of their HMDs available, VR will settle down enough that a course could last at least a year.

In the meantime, here's Unity's manual page on VR: http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/VROverview.html

VR is very exciting if you don't mind rewriting your VR code every 2 months! :) Like I said, I hope that changes somewhat by the time consumer HMDs are available.

Hey Nick Pettit,

Thank you for the clarification. I would love to see some VR courses in the future, but I agree with everything you have said.

I also think that VR is quite advanced, and it's good to get all the basics of game development in the courses before rolling out things like VR.

Thanks for releasing game development by the way. My only question is with regards to software. I know you are planning to release 3D Art with Maya LT. My question is will we have to purchase software like Maya LT for the course, or do you guys at Treehouse have something up your sleeve?

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your time and answer, Nick! I'm glad we're going to have a course, at least in the distant future :) It's amazing how much Treehouse has grown, even in the few months I've been a student. Also it really helps me in my job.

Hey John,

We should have more news about Maya LT once the course is released. Stay tuned. :)

Hi Devon Fox,

We don't have any VR courses to announce right now, but we did just release a quick Workshop on VR that covers the basics. Check it out: https://teamtreehouse.com/library/introduction-to-virtual-reality

I think that time has come. The Oculus connect 3 conference was MIND BLOWING! to say the least. Please watch the full one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS-9g9kx8jw

I hope tree house quickly gets around to creating a course on this topic as I am a huge VR fan. There is an upcoming NanoDegree by Udacity coming very soon, already listed on their site. I love treehouse, it is by far the best value for time and money rich and clear educational content provider on the market so I would prefer to learn this with the TreeHouse team. Please flag this up!

Hi Camila,

Good question. I would also like to know this, but I think it might be jumping the gun a little bit.

VR game development would be quite an advanced course, there might need to be a few more courses leading up to VR.

However, it is definitely a course I would like to see sometime in the future.

For now, I am just happy there is a Game Development course :D

Yes, the course is great! I'm going to try to start it this weekend! I wanted to learn C# but needed a project to get me inspired :)

I really want to start it, but I think Game Development is a bit of a distraction away from what I need to learn. However, it sounds like a fun weekend sometime :D

I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully see some of your work on the community here soon.

Well, it would be a distraction for me, but as I'm already working as a front end (thanks Treehouse), sometimes I find I want to explore other areas. Also, I'm finishing the starting period for college (in my university, you have one year of common subjects and then you start the subjects of your specific studies) so next year I'll be a CS student and will be learning a little about every area. It would help me decide in what to specialize, also we have a game development group and I stopped going because they were too advanced for me at the time.

Ah that makes a lot of sense. Hopefully this course will help you catch up with the others.

So far I have worked my way through just one track on Treehouse. But I am thinking about just trying a bit of everything soon :D

Game Development is always something that has interested me, but deep down I think I know that I won't do it for work, so it doesn't seem worth learning yet.

Keep up your good work, give me a shout if you ever want to work on something.

Sure! Just let me know if you need help on the front end :) Treehouse should have an 'add friend' option or something

Will do. Yeah they should do :D

Do you use Flat UI design at all?

Camila N

Yes, I can addapt to other things too. I'm working on my design skills, here at work we have a team of designers so I don't get to do that much but I learn a lot when they explain their design decisions. I'm designing more because I'm about to launch an ecommerce website for a personal project so I've been reviewing courses, there appears to be a lot more opportunities for designing lately.

Ah okay. If you ever want a great palette to design from, you have to check out this site.

I'm going to be creating a web app soon, I love Flat Design and might need some help :D

Wow, great site, didn't know it. And yeah, just let me know if you need some help, I'll have a lot more of free time from December to March when I'm on vacation but still now have some free days a week to work on something.

Okay, no problem. I might take you up on that.

I guess the only way to talk to someone on Treehouse is to tag them in the forum like: Camila N
