Will I ever need to initialize a File-Stream/Print-writer outside of a Try(with resource) block?

Craig Dennis(beard/Java) has only ever initialized a File I/O thing like this:

public void fileSaver(String file) { try ( FileOutputSteam fos = new FileOutputStream(file); PrintWriter writer = new PrintWriter(fos); ) { blah blah } } catch...

Anyway, would it ever be advantageous to initialize 'fos' and 'writer' outside of Try's parenthesizes?
