Why won't my nav turn to white letters with an orange background?

It appears as though your text is outside of the anchor tags in your nav element. This causes the anchor element to collapse in on itself and become (basically) nonexistent. If you move the text before the anchors' closing tags, you should be good.

Mike's got the right answer. So some of the code will end up looking like this
