Why isn't this working?

I know that this is definitely improper syntax, but this is the answer I end up with by the information given to me in the lesson. I feel like it should work, but it won't :(

Equality.java 
// I have imported a java.io.Console for you, it is named console. 
if (firstExample.equals(secondExample)){
   console.printf("first is equal to second");
}
String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";

Hello, your if statement should go under the three declared variables. At this point you are checking on two variables that haven't been declared yet.

String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";

if (firstExample.equals(secondExample)){
   console.printf("first is equal to second");
}
