the %s is a String formatter. It will be replaced by the variable (here your name). After you close the text ("some text with the %s formatter" there should be a comma and then the variable name. It is a convention of the printf method. This method takes a text first and then the variable name that replaces the %s String formatter.
Makes sense?
And I see two typos here:
console.printf("Hello my name is %s\n", firstName); // comma and semicolon added
