Why is there a need to transfer your files to a 'dist' folder when using Gulp?

You have your source folder. Then you set up a task to transfer the files (html, js, css etc) to a 'dist' folder? Why can't you just keep everything you need in the appropriate source folders?

you can, putting production files in a dist or production folder is just common practice, gulp doesn't care where you put what you actually use to serve your page.
