Why do you need to modify before appending?

When I run the following code the attributes and classes of the button are not applied. It only works when I modify first it then add it to the listItem. Can anybody explain why?

  //Each element needs appending
  listItem.appendChild(checkBox);
  listItem.appendChild(label);
  listItem.appendChild(editInput);
  listItem.appendChild(editButton);
  listItem.appendChild(deleteButton);

  //Each element needs modifying

  checkBox.type = "checkbox";
  editInput.type = "text";

  editButton.innerText = "Edit";
  editButton.className = "edit";
  deleteButton.innerText = "Delete";
  deleteButton.className = "delete";

  label.innerText = taskString;
