11,702 PointsWhy do we want to ignore node files?
I'm unclear why we would want to ignore node, python, or swift files. Don't we want those to be on the repo?

2,656 Pointsthe node_modules directory is large and you don't want to version control someone else's code with your code.
Using a dependency manager it's easy to pull in those dependencies after you have cloned your repo.
If you're worried about keeping the same versions you can always lock them down using npm shrinkwrap
and for other projects you can find their respective methods of locking down dependencies.
