Why do I need this line of code?

I don't understand why I need the first line to pass the challenge. The code will function in my workspace without it.

You can get away with declaring variables in JavaScript without a let or var but once you assign it it is effectively declared as a global variable. Most other languages require explicit declaration. It is best to declare with intent and that is probably what the challenge wants to emphasize. It may work but may not be the best practice.
