Front End Web Development Techdegree Graduate 56,488 PointsHi Daniel,
Do you by any chance mean front and back-end?
If so, typically there are technologies like HTML and CSS that are used on the front end because they are great at adding structure and style to documents. Examples of this can be how text will be structured or what color the text will have. All this happens on the front end.
The backend is typically what happens behind the scenes, and there is no need for visual structure and style, because the back ends job is basically (This is a simplified version ) to handle the preparation and fetching/sending of data to the front end. HTML and CSS wouldn't do a very good job here, and that is why we use other technologies for this.
I hope that helps you,
Jonas
