What's the advantage of purchasing a domain name from a domain registrar, as opposed to getting it with the web hosting?

Is there any reason not to get the domain directly from my web host when I sign up there?

Cost is probably the main incentive, although I've known hosting companies charge you to assign it if it's bought from elsewhere.

Thanks, Alex. What do you mean by, "...I've known hosting companies pay for you to assign it if it's bought from elsewhere."?

Apologies, meant charge, I've updated above

So you buy your hosting from one company, then buy the domain, the hosting company charges you a one off few to use that domain with their hosting.

Yes Alex is right. i purchased hosting then a domain and it cost me to put it together. i went to godaddy.com and purchased a domain with hosting and it was actually a lot more cost effective to go through with godaddy. godaddy now supports Word Press and a host of other products. ym package costs 12.00/mo for domain unlimited hosting services and plex dashboard that allows me to add in various programs. it runs ruby so i can use one of my private subdomains to test web apps before i actually deploy the production version and it still gives me feed back on performance ect. id look into it great starting service.
