What would you say is the most 'in-demand' track? Not from a popularity point of view, but as a marketable skill?

I'm just starting out and I have some programming background already. Several of the programming tracks look interesting to me. My goal is to be hired to do some part time freelance work from home and want to acquire the skills that will give me the greatest chance to succeed (and maybe these aren't all exclusively technical skills). Any thoughts from anyone?

I would check out programming job boards in your area. Ever place is different. Some might love Ruby, some Python, some Java. A generic answer will likely do more harm then good.

From the job boards i have been looking at iOS developer seem to be in high demand. Objective -C is not the most friendly language (that why apple released swift last year). However my personal recommendation is to do the front-end or web development first, then dive in to iOS if that is your aim. Although this might not apply to you if you have experience.

You should check indeed.com for demand in your area.

Now with all of this said pick something you love. I know several people who can do iOS development but it is not worth the extra money because they hate it.

Thanks David and luke for your advice. I come from more of an academic background so I don't know what the marketplace is looking for - I am interested in different things so I could go in any 1 of a number of directions. I didn't even know about indeed.com so thanks luke also for that tip.

I am with Ricky and will not say specific track or language. Look at what people are looking and sense it sounds like this is going to be something you do in your free time make sure it is a language enjoy writing. Also once you find the language you want to learn, focus on it. As a lot of people that have been doing it for a while have told me, it takes a while to learn the little tricks and you will probably never learn them all.
