29,725 PointsI'd say it depends heavily on the site you're migrating from. With a big site (perhaps already in a CMS) you'd definitely benefit from first running it through an automatic importer to clean up afterwards. If it has lots of complicated, intertwined content types and such, more cleanup and reorganization of content may be necessary. If a quick import attempt fails, you can always fall back to manual imports.
If it's a smaller site with mostly static content and perhaps a handful of posts, you could probably be quicker manually than setting up an importer.
