Remember that there are 2 lines.

Line #2 is for N-Z

This should set lineNumber to 2 because

This method call should set lineNumber to 1, because 'A' from "Anderson" is between A-M.

Likewise Charlie Brown's 'B' is between 'A' and 'M', so lineNumber should be set to 1

Courses Plus Student 27,294 PointsTo organize the names based on the last name, you need to get the first letter of the word. So you could do this by using the charAt method and passing it the index which you know is zero. You could also change the last name to upper or lowercase or even use ignore case, to make sure that your program will still work if your user enters a last name without a capital letter at index 0. You also want to check your if statement and change the symbols to >= and <= respectively as you want to include those letters at the ends.
// As an example
if (lastName.charAt(0) < 'M' && lastName.charAt(0) > 'A') {
// Any code in here will only run if the first letter is between 'B' and 'N'
// So you need to change the signs to >= and <= to include the letters 'A' and 'M'.
}
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {
/**
* Assists in guiding people to the proper line based on their last name.
*
* @param lastName The person's last name
* @return The line number based on the first letter of lastName
*/
public int getLineNumberFor(String lastName) {
this.lastName= lastName;
if (lastName.charAt(0) <= 'M' && lastName >= 'A') {
return lineNumber = 1;
}
else (lastName.charAt(0) <= 'Z' && lastName >= 'N') {
return lineNumber = 2;
}
/*
lineNumber should be set based on the first character of the person's last name
Line 1 - A thru M
Line 2 - N thru Z
*/
return lineNumber;
}
}
