what 's the function of 'return' command?

I don't quite understand what exactly the 'return' command do? Can anyone help me to clarify? I very appreciate

    greeting = "hello"

    return greeting # return sends greeting back to where the function hello() is called


print(hello()) # this would print "hello" because it was "returned" to where it was called
