You also can't redeclare a variable multiple times: int line
You need to see what the first character is in each name, and charAt(0) will give you that character, as a char:
public int getLineFor(String lastName) {

Otherwise send them to line 2 */
int line = 0;
if (lastName.charAt(0) < 'M') {
line = 1;
} else {
line = 2;
}
return line;
}
