It looks like you're really close. In the if-statement we can check if the letter matches the tile -- that is, the chars match.
public int getTileCount(char tile) {
int counter = 0;
for (char letter: mHand.toCharArray()) {
if (letter == tile) {
counter += 1; }
}
return counter;
}
