it goes in a clockwise direction top,right,bottom and left. For eg:

margin:10px 5px 15px 20px;
  • top margin is 10px
  • right margin is 5px
  • bottom margin is 15px
  • left margin is 20px

  • 'auto' means the browser will set the margin value.

  • '0' means no margin.

  • If you don't specify any value then, it is taken as '0px'

Aishu is mostly right. However, not specifying a margin will not result in 0; it will instead default to the initial value as set by the browser (or a reset.css/normalize.css stylesheet if those are used).

When you declare one value for margin, it will set all four margins the same.

When you declare two values for margin, the first will be the top and bottom, the second will be left and right.

When you declare three values for margin, the first will be the top, the second will be the left and right, and the third will be the bottom.
