What is the access modifier set to by default for variables declared and initialized inside of a method?

If we declare a variable inside of a method:

void update() {
//does positionX get set to public by default?
float postionX = Random.Range(-spawnArea, spawnArea);
}

Variables inside are method are local to that method only and can't be accessed outside it. This includes method parameters as well. Additionally if you declare variables inside a code block surrounded by curly braces inside the method, they are only accessible inside those braces, not outside. They don't have access modifiers because access modifiers only make sense with class fields or methods.
