I thought that the smaller the memory footprint the quicker the machine code runs.

Memory footprint basically means the amount of memory a program takes up when it is being executed, and machine code runs incredibly quickly, since it is the lowest level programming language.
So you are definitely correct in thinking it has a smaller memory footprint and it does run quickly.
