What if I wanted to change the post_thumbnail layout?

I hope this is linked to the video that I was just watching, as I'm assuming it is....

Say I want to change the post_thumbnails layout (pink-triangle and one other). When I only include two portfolio pages, they are at opposite ends of each other. I know CSS could work, but is there a better way?
