501 PointsYou can do web development on Windows computer but it's easier to do on a computer which runs Linux or Apple OSX operating systems. If you choose Linux, i recommend Ubuntu distribution.

501 PointsLinux operating system is open-source, so it's free! You don't have to pay for it. You have to folow install instruction, that's all.

20,881 PointsThere are options for Windows users. Here are three apps that will set up a local development environment very similar to MAMP: XAMPP, WAMP, and Bitnami WAMP Stack. You don't necessarily have to be on a Mac or a Linux box.

7,506 PointsI know this is a very late answer, since I just started this course myself, but MAMP Pro also has a Windows version now. I also recommended AMPPS, which I read that it's a lot faster/more efficient than MAMP Pro for both Mac, Windows, and Linux.
There is also Microsoft Web Matrix if you find all those others above complicated for you. I am also a Windows user and I've used all of the ones mentioned. So far I like AMPPS best.
