26,726 PointsHi David, doctype means document type. It tells the browser, which document is it working with. In HTML 5, just use this doctype:
<!DOCTYPE html>
Browsers are forgiving these days, so if you forget the document type, the browser should still display your docuemtn correctly.

23,118 PointsDOCTYPE describes the HTML used on your page. Browsers use DOCTYPE to render a page as well. Each browser renders a page differently. So the same page on Google chrome will/may look different than lets say Firefox. I hope this helps.
