What are the key contents a landing page for a portfolio must-have? How do you come up with a color scheme and layout?

Your work should be front and center. Also make it clear what disciplines you are showcasing. Sometimes it might not be clear. Are you the designer, developer, illustrator etc. The branding and color scheme should be enough for users to pick up a little of your personality and style, but not too much as it could clash or detract from the work you are showcasing.

As for color schemes. There are plenty of sites and apps out there to help you pick (eg: http://colrd.com or coolors.co/). Either that or roll your own. Read up on the basics of color theory first. Get to know your complementary, analogous, monchromatic and other types of color schemes (http://tutorialsoneverything.blogspot.com/2011/05/004-basic-colour-theory-colour-schemes.html).

Thanks Alan I appreciate it. I'm also struggling with layout because I'm designing using Wix site. I don't know how to follow a consistent style with good visual hierarchy. I can share with you if have a spare minute https://chidebiola.wixsite.com/myportfolio/flashback-cloud-service

Iā€™d suggest not trying to bend a Wix website to fit your look. They have like 500 templates. Use one that fits your needs and tweak the colours and images. If you truly want an original layout then you should design it upfront (which might lead you to do a few more courses to achieve this), then work out how to apply it second. Tweaking ad hoc often leads to inconsistent results.
