Support couldn't help me with my question, and referred me to here instead... Hopefully someone can help!

Hello! I'm hoping that you can place a value on a site for me... I know that's a lot to ask, but you probably have a better idea than me.

http://tennis-connection.com

I ask because I'm operating a small business of my own that makes websites for people, but I'm not totally sure on how to charge and what to charge.

Let me know!

So you and the client have already agreed to do the website? Prior to starting you didn't set a price for the project and/or an amount per hour you charge or ask if they have a budget? It looks like you're not only the designer and developer, but you're also a member of the organization as well, kind of like the Rogaine guy. It also looks like you're beginning your journey as a designer/developer. Two of the best things you will need on this journey is the ability to network and have a portfolio. This website provides both. But, you also shouldn't sell yourself short. However, coming up with a price AFTER the project has been delivered can be unfair to either side.

The only people I believe who can answer this are you and the client. I would take the (amount of hours invested on your part * $X) and present it to them.

I'm no guru, but the way I work is to first speak with the client to find out what their expectations are for the website. Next, I get a high level idea for the content or message they're trying to convey. Then I will get some insight about the artistic style they're interested in and the demographic I need to make sure I cater to (which means, which version of internet explorer i need to support). I do this through a series of many, many questions.

After all of that I can asses how much dynamic content they will need and how much design I will have to do from scratch. I put together a basic scope of work and present them with a quote. Within this scope I outline the features involved, my development process, how much exposure they will have, what kind of flexibility for change is allowed (there will definitely be some!), and I also make sure that the client is well aware that any work beyond the scope will cost $XX per hour.

First of all, thank you for your insight and detailed response. Second, I have already charged them and collected a payment (which took into consideration that it's the first website I sold), and did just about everything you mentioned before getting started on the site.

So, I am merely looking for an opinion without disclosing the price I went with.

Thanks!

Ahhh I see. I misunderstood.

Well not knowing any of the upfront information makes it hard for anyone to put a value on it? I think more so what you're asking for is a critique of your work?

Perhaps the OP is asking for a rough valuation of the market price of the work required to produce that website.

Yes ^^ Benjamin Gray

Well... not so much, but if you have some suggestions I would appreciate them. I was mostly trying to determine how to charge in the future because I'd hope to be fair about it, yet competitive.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult I promise! I am trying to help, I just want to wrap my head around it.

An arbitrary number then; $300.

I do want to say, for a first commercial release as a designer, you've done well for yourself. You have talent and a great eye for layout and flow. Keep at it, I think you have a bright career ahead of you.

Thank you I appreciate that!

There's some good stuff there but you're not finished with it. There's things that need fixing. Center the content, deal with the rogue "More" on the homepage and move the "testimonials". You need to get rid of the white space at the bottom of the page and also make your link a lot more subtle. It sticks out like a sore thumb at the moment.

Just go through it with a fine tooth comb and fix the things that need fixing.

In terms of what I'd charge, I don't do design but to develop that design would be up to $500.

Should calculate how much you need per month to run your business and your personal monthly expenses. It should give you a relative hourly rate that you can use to calculate your work. For example if your hourly rate is $100 then multiply it by the number of hours it will take you to do the job and you have the value.
