10,415 PointsWeb Designers or Graphic Designers?
Hello Guys!
As I have mentioned previously that Ben Hunt says that web design is online direct marketing rather than decorating. He distinguishes web designers from graphic designers. He says that content overrides presentation. He also says that average presentation can do the job well if the content is good. Obviously totally bogus presentation isn't going to help, (he agrees with it). Now he says that web designers need to buy the design elements of a website from graphic designers and then focus more on strategy, campaign planing, copy and content of the site. He compares this with the example of a contractor hiring machinery for digging a hole instead of manually digging it himself spending several days and hours of paid labour. My question is in this case which field has more scope and which field should we focus upon. If I choose to be a design elements maker, should I completely forget about learning php and javascript and only learn basic html and css while spending all my energies on graphic design skills?

39,199 PointsIf you enjoy programming and design then do both. However, you don't have to know JavaScript to make icons, logos or buttons.
Play to your strengths.
If you aren't an artist type then you would be well advised to purchase your assets and assemble them as Ben Hunt suggests. If you are assembling them it depends on how small of a team and how simple the sites you work on.

10,415 PointsI would like Treehouse staff to write an article on their blog about this topic that whether web design the old style is dead or not? Ben Hunt says that there are two types of web designers. The first type are those who create assets like themes and graphics etc. The second type are those who use those assets and focus on their marketing skills in building a website which attracts customers and sells the product for which the site was made for. Do we need to re look how web design is going to be in the near future as Ben Hunt suggests? Also should good designers focus on creating assets like templates and wordpress themes and should the team treehouse curriculum change the way it is presented now. I invite team treehouse to view this issue more in depth. I am posting links to content I need you to watch in order to understand completely what I am trying to say..
