Use the getString() method to get the string resource. You need to pass to the method the id of the string resource, which you can get using: R.string.morePuppies

Button loadPuppiesButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.puppiesButton);
String buttonLabel = "";
loadPuppiesButton.setText("LOAD");
buttonLabel = getString(R.string.morePuppies);
