Why do i have to add the [1] at the end of my 2nd variable?
var fullName = document.getElementById("full_name");
var lastName = document.getElementsByTagName("last_name")[1];

OR document.getElementsByTagName('span')
, depending on whether you want to select the elements based on the class
attribute or the type of HTML tag, respectively.
Second, the [1]
indicates that you want the second item in the list (it's zero-indexed, or starts with zero), normally an array, but in this case it's a HTMLCollection.

8,512 PointsThe [1] at the end of the second variable is because the interpreter is treating the two spans first_name and last_name like array elements and using bracket notation to access them.
<h1 id="full_name">
<span class="first_name">Andrew</span>
<span class="last_name">Chalkley</span></h1>
