ValueError: list.remove(x): x not in list

active_states = [ 'ACTIVE', 'red', 'green', 'blue', 'CANCELLED', 'FINISHED', 5, ]

active_no_states = [ 'ACTIVE', 'red', 'green', 'blue', 'CANCELLED', 'FINISHED', 5, ] active_no_states.remove(['FINISHED'])

This is giving ValueError:list

lists.py 
active_states = [
    'ACTIVE',
    'red', 'green', 'blue',
    'CANCELLED',
    'FINISHED',
    5,
]

active_no_states = [
    'ACTIVE',
    'red', 'green', 'blue',
    'CANCELLED',
    'FINISHED',
    5,
]
active_no_states.remove(['FINISHED'])

For the challenge you need to remove from the provided list states. The task want the last item removed. This is the 5.

I tried this way

states = [ 'ACTIVE', 'red', 'green', 'blue', 'CANCELLED', 'FINISHED', 5, ]

states.remove(5)

It is throwing error "Don't change states directly! ", am I doing something wrong?

It looks like the original value of states has changed. Where is the list that should be the second item: 

states = [
    'ACTIVE',
    ['red', 'green', 'blue'],  # <-- don't edit this line
    'CANCELLED',
    'FINISHED',
    5,
]

states.remove(5)
