using split

available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white" available.split(';') sundaes = [available]

attempting to split available at the semi-colon and rename it sundaes as a list. Where am i going wrong?

You should assign the result of the statement in the second line of your code ( available.split(';') ) to the variable sundaes.

sundaes = available.split(';')
