Using GIMP instead of Photoshop

I can't really justify the cost of Photoshop just now, but do want to learn a good art program. I've been told good things about GIMP, but what are other peoples experiences with it? Are skills from the Photoshop tutorials here on Treehouse transferable to it?

In my experience GIMP is difficult to use. However, many people use it to make professional looking work; it just takes longer, or getting used to it.

You might try Pixelmator (Mac) or Affinity Designer (Mac). Those are the two best alternatives for the Mac. You might note that PS has monthly plans which really aren't that bad considering the amount of money you can make with PS. Otherwise, GIMP might be your best choice. A lot of new software is emerging these days, so keep an eye out.

I have bough sketch3 and i have never looked back ps it costs $99 so nice to use

Another good one! Thanks, Tunde.

Hi Greg!

I have used GIMP in the past but it will never stop me from going back to Photoshop! If you are a student you can get a great deal on it and I can assure you it is worth it!

However, if you are an OS X user I would highly recommend you check out Pixelmator! It is a fantastic image manipulation program!
