I get that you can reference what kind of elements you want to change, but how would you change only every other element in the list or specific ones?

I believe what you are looking for is Pseudo-classes. w3Schools has some great resources on this. If you are still working through the CSS modules, you will get to them later.
I suggest taking a look here (http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_pseudo_classes.asp) to learn more.
