21,330 PointsSpaceman has no effects on it, but bounding box is still huge--how do I fix it?
When I went to edit the Spaceman, there was no glow effect on it.There are no other effects on the symbol either. How do I make the bounding box contain only the symbol?

12,269 PointsOK...now take a look if there is any stray object or path/point around the Spaceman that maybe grouped with it. If you can't see anything in the regular view go into vector view mode (apple/command Y) that should show you everything. Then delete it.
If you still having issue, ungroup Spaceman and using any number of different select modes reselect the parts you want and regroup. Simplest not the fastest just use the select tool (v) and hold shift as you go. Once you have everything regroup (apple/command g). As you select watch the bounding box and make sure its only selecting what you want and is the size you expect.

12,269 PointsIn the video when the Spaceman he goes back to the original Spaceman and in the "appearance window" shuts off the glow effect. If you don't want the glow effect either you the could use the direct select tool (A) and select the object with the glow effect delete it, then import to shapes. Look at the video around 4:30.

21,330 PointsRight, but I deleted the glow effect, and that didn't do anything...
