You forgot the html, head and body elements.

It should be like this:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title> Cole Anderson | Designer</title>
</head>

<body>
<header>
  <a href="index.html">
    <h1>Cole Anderson</h1>
    <h2>Designer</h2>
  </a>
  <nav>
    <ul>
      <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
      <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
      <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
    </ul>
  </nav>
</header>
<section>
  <ul>
    <li>
      <img src="img/numbers-01.jpg" alt="">
    </li>
  </ul>
</section>
<footer>
  <p>&copy; 2015 Cole Anderson.</p>
</footer>
</body>
</html>
