Some problem with div aligning div

I'm novice, and I'm from Russia, sorry for some text mistakes if it would be. I try to align div by using this code: in html <div id="wrapper"> bla bla bla </div>

in css

wrapper {

max-width: 940 px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 5%; }

but! It is not working.

it works by using another combination in css:

(something like this)

div1 {

width:288px; height:30px; position: fixed; <!-- for example --> left: 50%; margin-left:-144px; font-family: Impact; font-size:20px; border-style:none; z-index:1; }

Why? (google chrome browser)

css/main.css
a {
  text-decoration: none;
}

#wrapper {
  max-width: 940 px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  padding: 0 5%;
}
index.html

Hi, It doesn't work as in max-width property you left space in it's value between 940 and px and you shouldn't..

So, instead of this

#wrapper {
  max-width: 940 px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  padding: 0 5%;
}

you should remove the space and write the value like this one

#wrapper {
  max-width: 940px;
  margin: 0 auto;
  padding: 0 5%;
}
