Just started the How to Market Your Business track. I love this idea:
You might be the best coder in the world, but unless you establish authority online and share expertise, nobody will know.
I have a distant acquaintance possessing a talent for photography. She doesn't know much about marketing or business though. She posts on behalf of her business on Facebook -- weekly or so with messages such as, "Gee the weather sure is great this weekend!" Point being, I can see what not to do. But what about the other way around?
How does a great web design business do it? Does anyone know any design companies that do this really well?

9,767 PointsEnage your audience and don't sell them anything. They know what you do from the thumping great title at the top of the page and if you're engaging them they'll look more into the website. Talk to people like people, not the Internet. It's very easy to use Internet grammar, short and succinct. People don't want that. You wouldn't want it if you went into a store so don't do it online. On the flip side, don't ramble on and spam them with content. A nice post each day that people actually want to read because its topical, numerous or interesting...or a bit of all three.
That's a snippet of what I follow.

2,596 PointsI don't know about design companies, but every social media platform is different and you must cater to your audience on each platform. Creating content to post on social media is not hard. If you already have content, such as good photographs, infographics, your blog, or even other articles you have read that you think would be beneficial for your audience etc, then you can re-purpose this content on your social media channels.
Try looking for a blog addressing the topic of marketing for photographers. You can really learn about niche social media marketing from bloggers.

Treehouse Guest Teacher"Establishing authority" can be done in different ways, and that's because people trust different things. Some people believe an active social media profile means you're effective and consistent. Others might look for relevant content in the hopes you're addressing a specific need. And still others want to know you're listening, and if they don't get a reply to a tweet, for example, they'll think it's all for show.
The tide has turned and social media requires listening now more than ever. Small businesses can absolutely clean up if they can get into conversations with new potential clients, so it's important to find interesting ways to start those conversations through all kinds of different content, as Matthew noted above. You can never go wrong posting something awesome, or even reposting it a few days later. If something gets a good response, share it in different places and/or with slightly different keywords and you might get even more of a following.
