Simply what is the clipping mask and the compound path?

Use an a simple example please :)

Clipping Mask:

A clipping mask clips the visible boundaries of successive layers.

For example if I had a layer with a rectangular photograph successive to a clipping mask that had a circle shape, the photograph would be clipped to the size of the circle shape.

Compound Path:

A compound path acts like a group of objects.

For example if I had a circle and square object that intersected with each other and I merged them together or intersected them, the result would be a compound path of the two objects.
