Should I use Illustrator or Photoshop for website mockups and wireframes?

Adobe Illustrator for Web Design involves creating a wireframe.

I had always been under the impression that this would be done using Adobe Photoshop, and a tool like Illustrator is used for creating vector graphics like logos and illustrations?

Hey there Carl,

So I feel like this question is going to be completely personal preference. I for one, cannot stand using Illustrator and even when i took Adobe Design classes and we used Illustrator, i found it miserable. My personal preference for design work will always be Photoshop (this may be because I'm a million times more comfortable using it.)

I watched a few of the Design course videos and a wireframe software they used was Balsamiq. I thought this was an extremely cool concept and honestly may start using this when i begin wireframing versus photoshop.

I guess the best way for me to find out is to experiment with multiple tools, then compare and contrast their pros and cons, and then I can decide what works best for me. I've found some pros to using Illustrator already, such as vector graphics.

I just checked Balsamiq's website. It looks great. I'll look further into that once I finish my bookmarked Design courses.

No problem Carl, i'm glad i could help!! In the end, it always comes down to personal preference in this category so there really is no wrong answer!

I was told even something as simple as pen and paper to wireframe can be a great tool! But i have to say, Balsamiq looks to be the one ill be using just because its simple, it looks neat, and still gives that, "Hey, im just sketching this out" kind of a feel! Plus being able to add mobile containers /browser containers is extremely cool!!
