i don't know what i am doing wrong but in the code in the bottom i have to set the background size to 20px and remove padding and set left padding to 30px.

I think you just left off the second property for the background-size attribute, which requires height and width.
Since they want it '20px square', this is just a matter of:
background-size: 20px 20px;
