Selecting Multiple Objects

How are you supposed to select multiple objects. In this video when making the clipping mask I've tried selecting both the circle and the sketch using click and shift-click. When I try to make the clipping mask using this nothing happens. But if I drag a box around the sketch and circle then the clipping mask works. Am I doing something dumb? Illustrator CC 2014 on Windows.

Illustrator only selects the last item selected when making a mask.

I would be confused with the word "last item". I would say the circle needs to be on the top layer to be a clipping path to the sketch. When you dragged the box over the circle and sketch I would assume that the box is on a top layer. Also if you look at the circle shape in the layers pallet is the circle above the sketch and identified as a path.

Sorry, it should be last object created. "If you try to use more than one object as a clipping mask, only the last object you created will act as a maskβ€”the others will be ignored."
