is there a an easier way i can understand how the system works.. i thought i figured it out but 000000111.. i thought equalled 6 because the 1s are in the 3r place 2 place and 1 place.. so 3 plus 2 plus 1 equal 6

what you are calling the 3s place is the 4s place. each place in a binary number is a power of 2, starting from the right at 2^0. so the third from the right place is 2^2 or 4. a 0 there means no 4s and a one means one 4. so 111 is 7. 1000 is 8.
