i pass step 1 but when i want to check my work at step 2 it says task 1 is no longer working.

on it's own on line 22 which does not belong there. If you remove that your code should pass.
It's also worth mentioning that you don't need to append this
to the barCount
variable, doing so won't cause an issue but it also isn't doing anything useful. You mostly only need to prepend variables with this
when you are setting a field variable equal to a parameter which has the same name. The this
helps Java distinguish between the two identically named variables.
