Portfolio website and blog be separate websites or together?

Hi everyone,

4 questions here:

  1. I plan on making my own portfolio website AND a blog at the same time. Should my portfolio be a separate website? Or should my portfolio and blog be together?

  2. The reason I'm asking this is because I want to make passive income on my blog, and I can't have Adsense/affiliate marketing if my blog was on my portfolio site, right? Correct if I'm wrong. What should I do? Should I make two different types of blogs? One on my portfolio and another for passive income? I can't duplicate content because google will penalize me for that. Is there a way to 'market myself as a software developer' AND make passive income on my blog at the same time?

  3. Is it even possible to generate passive income at all if I'm just starting out? Or is there really no point to it?

  4. To be honest I just want some type of passive income on the side to financially support myself, is there any way I can accomplish this?

I'd appreciate some help and advice, and feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions, thanks!

  2. I am pretty sure that you can still obtain google adsense if your blog and portfolio website are combined. Either option should work, it depends. If both the blog and portfolio are both code-related, it might make more sense to combine them together.

  3. I have some decent blogging experience; ad income was the lowest of all revenue streams. Affiliate marketing through your blog and email list tends to result in much higher profits. You shouldn't expect to make much off ad revenue unless you have a substantial amount of daily readers - I would say high thousands or tens of thousands at least. I would recommend you focus on generating quality content and promoting your articles and website before you look into monetization. See if you are committed enough because most bloggers tend to back out after a couple of articles.

  4. Well realistically, it would depend on the content of your blog and how well you promote it! You shouldn't expect to start generating passive income overnight though, it will take months of even years to build up an audience (if you continue publishing quality content and market, market, market).

I dont know enough to answer all your questions....one thought... can you add a link to your passive income site like in a footer of your portfolio maybe....that way its visible but not distracting....it can just be another page on the same website. If you try to sell stuff on the main page that will scare everyone off & they will think its a spam site.
