Point of vertical type tool and vertical type on a path tool

In the video it says that these tools are the same as the area type tool and path type tool, what's the point of having them?

I am guessing that there will be restrictions later on what you can do with one tool which might work better on the other tool? e.g the text path may want to be bent later and I don't think this will work using area type tool...
