44 PointsPlease read - Teamtreehouse took this thread down after my thread gained momentum re: them ripping us off
I am rewriting this, as Teamtreehouse took down the original thread because I'm guessing they didn't want this matter to become more public than it had started to.
In short, Teamtreehouse removed a bunch of videos from the $25/month membership, and changed these videos to so only the more recent $50/month membership could access them.
Before realizing this, I recently rejoined to specifically to watch the excellent Wordpress workflow video. I thought I wasn't signed in, as it said it was PRO access only and my paid $25/month membership didn't cover that video anymore.
I sent an e-mail to Teamtreehouse asking why they would do such a thing. Their response:
" Thank you so much for reaching out to us.
As a teaching team, we are now focusing on teaching to two different groups of students. Our Basic content is developed for students who have little to no prior experience in programming, while our Pro content is developed for students who already have some level of development experience and are likely working in the technology profession.
Our Pro content (and the content we've moved over to Pro from our Basic plan) assumes a certain level of knowledge and moves much quicker than our standard basic content. After a recent audit, we realized we had more advanced content in the basic plan and we wanted to make sure that we were not confusing or frustrating our basic students by having this content within the basic plan.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let us know. Thanks for being a student with Treehouse! " I thought this was absurd, and posted to get opinions on this on this forum, and had other people who felt similarly cheated on here.
Yesterday, when I clicked on a reply button to the thread from my e-mail, the thread was no longer there, and I can only assume Teamtreehouse did this as to avoid the bad publicity that would come from such a low-blow to their customers.
I can understand the need to change pricing models, however to suddenly strip promised content away from users and make them pay 2x as much for it is pure unethical.
Shame.

24,604 PointsHey Dainel,
I'm unfamiliar with your recent post. Perhaps another moderator removed it by accident.
This topic has been brought up in the past. The response from Treehouse on the matter was similar to what you posted above. I understand your frustration, especially if you had accessed some of the now higher tiered content in the past (Though this change took place months ago). It would be make sense to grant access to these courses to users who had active subscriptions before this change took place.

44 PointsJacob, I personally was a student for a significant amount of time, then a few months ago (prior to the apparent change) I stopped my subscription ($4000 cat surgery bill - sigh). I came back with the assumption that the videos I had previous access to would be the same. As we now know, this is not the case. Again, I strongly urge the team treehouse administration to do the right thing here, as there is an increasing number of people that are becoming aware of this.

8,600 PointsHi Daniel,
Thanks for reaching out and sorry about any confusion that caused. It wasn't intended for the whole thread to become deleted, just the posts of a select individual who was inciting hate and using excessive profanity which violated section 2.3.1 of our terms and conditions.
As previously mentioned, we understand that this may not have been a popular decision for some of you, but with that said, we do strongly believe that the Basic plan needed re-organization and that certain content didn't belong there.
I'm happy to discuss the matter further with anyone over email at help@teamtreehouse.com and see if there's anything that can be worked out. Thanks for the patience and understanding.

16,425 Points,You could of added that functionality in the UI instead of stripping away that content from basic users and charging more money. Many students aren't using pro subscription as they can't afford it including myself and i feel it is insulting to suggest that all basic members will find the content 'frustrating' and 'confusing'. I have messaged the CEO and waiting for comment. Students respectfully request that Team Treehouse reconsiders this action.

23,287 PointsHey Oliver,
Hopefully you just received my Twitter DM. Apologies for the slow reply.
We're working hard to navigate this change while creating as little frustration as we can for our Students like yourself. I'm sorry that this decision affected you personally. As you've been a loyal Student for so long, I'm hoping we can figure something out for you personally. Let's carry on the conversation over Twitter DM or email.
Thank you so much for being a Student for 2+ years!
All the best, Ryan

44 PointsRyan, with all due respect, while your sentiment to Ryan is kind, you can't just give a small present to one person while there are still x numbers of users, including myself, affected by these unfair actions.

I'm very new here, but I'm curious how exactly the Web Typography course can be counted as a Pro course to a high enough degree that you can justify locking it away from standard users, when the CSS Basics course instructs us to take it numerous times. I'm not just talking about one or two small references in the middle of a video, but the teacher actually makes a point of ending the videos by telling us to go and study that course.
While I understand that some topics may be more suited to only the more experienced users of the site, this seems like a key topic has been locked away for no reason other than to get people to pay extra.

23,287 PointsHi Kai,
I'm frustrated to hear that. I didn't know that we were recommending a Pro Course, in a Basic Course. I agree, that's not cool and I'll flag it to the team. Thank you for speaking up!
Best, Ryan

We just moved the Web Typography course back over to Basic. Let me know if you have any trouble!

I look forward to taking the Web Typography course.

25,493 PointsWhile I agree that Treehouse should have AT LEAST sent an alert so that those of us without a Pro plan could have taken the courses in the period before the courses were designated as being Pro BUT I’m do believe that it makes sense for Treehouse to make some more Pro content because there isn’t very much.
Dainel Linsenmann
44 Pointshum4n01d Creating new basic/pro content and having that scheme is debatable and I can see arguments for both, but I feel that removing what was basic content and switching it over to pro is completely unjustifiable. Teamtreehouse, with all due respect, please reconsider.
