I don't know how to assign 1 for the letters A through M and 2 for the remaining. Also I tired this piece of code as well. But didn't work. [int lineNumber = ( indexOf(lastName) < M) ? 1: 2]. Please help me in getting this logic. Thanks in advance!
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {
/**
* Assists in guiding people to the proper line based on their last name.
*
* @param lastName The person's last name
* @return The line number based on the first letter of lastName
*/
public int getLineNumberFor(String lastName) {
int lineNumber = 0;
if (indexOf(lastName) < M)
{ lineNumber += 1;}
else {lineNumber += 2;}
//int lineNumber = ( getLineNumberFor.indexOf(lastName) < M) ? 1: 2 ;
/*
lineNumber should be set based on the first character of the person's last name
Line 1 - A thru M
Line 2 - N thru Z
*/
return lineNumber;
}
}
public class Example {
public static void main(String[] args) {
/*
IMPORTANT: You can compare characters using <, >. <=, >= and == just like numbers
*/
if ('C' < 'D') {
System.out.println("C comes before D");
}
if ('B' > 'A') {
System.out.println("B comes after A");
}
if ('E' >= 'E') {
System.out.println("E is equal to or comes after E");
}
// This code is here for demonstration purposes only...
ConferenceRegistrationAssistant assistant = new ConferenceRegistrationAssistant();
/*
Remember that there are 2 lines.
Line #1 is for A-M
Line #2 is for N-Z
*/
int lineNumber = 0;
/*
This should set lineNumber to 2 because
The last name is Zimmerman which starts with a Z.
Therefore it is between N-Z
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Zimmerman");
/*
This method call should set lineNumber to 1, because 'A' from "Anderson" is between A-M.
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Anderson");
/*
Likewise Charlie Brown's 'B' is between 'A' and 'M', so lineNumber should be set to 1
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Brown");
}
}

Front End Web Development Techdegree Graduate 33,271 Pointsare you using the charAt method? you can loop through a string or create a one-letter substring of a string and use charAt to compare the letter with another letter as it explains in the example. the syntax is myString.charAt(index) and it returns a letter of type char. so you could do:
String tree = "Treehouse";
char firstChar = tree.charAt(0);
firstChar now holds the value "T".

Courses Plus Student 2,132 PointsThank you for getting back to me. But I couldn't find out on how to return "1" when the first letter of the lastName falls between A through M and to return "2" for the remaining. Is this somewhat we need to use Ascii numbers like >065 || <077?

Courses Plus Student 2,132 Pointspublic int getLineNumberFor(String lastName) { int lineNumber = 0; if (lastName.charAt(0) = **[a-m] )** { int lineNumber = 1;} else { int lineNumber = 2;}
this is the point where I got stuck and don't know the logic on grouping. Please help
