What am I doing wrong? Am I on the right track? I'm confused.

12,556 PointsYou're using the indexOf() method wrong. indexOf takes a char, not an int (http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#indexOf%28int%29)
if(lastName.indexOf(0) <= 'M')
// ^ ^ you have compiler errors at these 2 points if you are using the indexOf() method
If you want to check the first letter of the string to see if it matches 'M' then you don't use indexOf(). You want to look at the this method: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#charAt%28int%29
