Python Python Basics (2015) Logic in Python Try and Except

Not sure how to write the syntax for the float.

I'm not sure where to place the float. I've tried several things.

trial.py 
def add(x,y):
    try:
        return int(x+y)
    except valueError:
        float(x+y)
add(5,6)

what I wrote was:

def add(x, y): return(float(x) + float(y))
